Towards a Mapping Scheme

I’m beginning to think that mapping something three-dimensional in a single map may be an act of folly, especially if the immersive feeling of free-floating in the void is part of the essential experience of the game. So… I’m beginning to suspect that we might best be served by mapping the bright, significant stars in our setting in both X-Y and X-Z terms, as someone did in the two maps posted below (of the nearest 25 ly to Sol).

Our version of the X-Y map would certain on a star other than Sol, I think. I’m not sure what’s a good candidate. Perhaps one of the brightest stars visible from the area around Sol? Sirius? Polaris?

Our version of the X-Z map would take the galactic plane as the baseline, though, not Sol (which is, I think, 60-some ly up from the galactic plane).
